The Refusal Of Time - MET

This post talks about an exhibit at the MetroPolitan Museum Of Art, New York.
The Artist made a five - channel video installation titled The Refusal Of Time with the purpose of meditation on time and spacial aspects of colonialism, globalization and his own intellectual life.
This thirty minute video explores various attributes of time.

I really like how he works around Albert Einstein's idea of 'railway stations don't operate exactly on schedule. This was clearly shown in his 4 tier work, where one act was done on 4 different time slots. And in between there was a weird version of a pendulum made of wood working continuously with the same intervals.

I enjoyed the part where the room suddenly looks like a Galaxy or the milky way , and there are sound waves that go across the room. That makes the sounds feel like its running through my body. The colonialism was shown when a man keeps walking around the room and shows the labour he puts in.
He shows his intellectual work through his journal.

He used really good sounds that sounded like wavelengths, it gave the whole room a feel of being inside a machine and it is continuously working but at different speeds and modes.

Final Project : DREAMS AND LADDERS

Dreams And Ladders

This is my final project for time class.

We were supposed to make anything that is non linear time, that means that the time should not be moving forward in the usual manner.

So for my video my concept came from the board game snakes and ladders.

I am the inventor or the game snakes and ladders and I have been getting cues in the dream on how to make this game.
So every time I sleep I get a clue on what format the game has to take. But each dream as you see ends with a snake's hiss. That signifies that every time I am trying to go forward with my dream I get bit by a snake and I am taken back to reality.
So in this video the dreams are in the green effect and the coloured drawings are the reality.

The last dream where you see only blurry surroundings is the dream where I don't get any clue but the only thing clear this time is the snake. So the last part to the game is the snakes which perform the same role in the game as they do in my dream.

The non linear part is the combination of dream being reality and reality being just a means of documentation. And the dream segments are always interrupted with reality unlike linear time that does not stop for anyone.

At the last I type that the game is done, and I can sleep. But suddenly you see I delete that and write wake up, that is the last climax where I explain that what you saw was actually all just one single dream and there wasn't any reality as such, but in my mind the whole process what documented.

I have made it very literal, but in my critique people who din't know what snakes and ladders the game is were a little confused. Rest I was complimented on my editing, everyone seemed to have liked the grid video and the filters I used.

This has been a great great journey so far, I have learned a lot in this class. And truly thank my professor for every bit of that. This is going to be great help in my future and education at Parsons.

Memento

In this movie by Christopher Nolan, Leonard is suffering from short term memory loss. He has his long term memory intact but the 'new memories' after his accident he cannot retain. He lost his wife, when a guy named John G. raped and murdered her. Hence, Leonard's mission becomes to find this man and kill him. For remembering all the tasks he writes himself post its, polaroid pictures and notes in his jackets. The clues to finding John are all tattooed on Leonard so that he never forgets that.
Another very interesting thing in the movie was they way he recorded himself as sammy, the person who has a short term memory loss. He recorded that on the phone device and made that into a story (which indeed was about himself). Every time he slept he forgets where he was and what was he doing there.

In the structure of the movie, they show the event first and then they show how Leonard got to it. So in  a way the entire movie is in flashback. That first the climax of that particular scene is showed and then it goes back in time to show the preceding events.
Chronologically the black and white sequence should come first and the coloured ones later.
They use memory inside memory, this was quite a head spinning film .

Jorge Luis Borges. "Circular Ruins" And "The Library of Babel"

1st Paragraph - Circular Ruins

The man who was called 'Tacitum man' manages to reach a ruin that was a temple. There he sleeps and intends dreams about a man. He was attended to by the natives so all he did was is sleep to carry on his dreams about that imaginary man. He was disturbed when he could not dream for a few days due to insomnia, he was very restless. Soon enough he created a person organ by organ, his son. The son would've been only a product of someone else's dreams. And soon enough to protect his son, the man himself finds out that he was also a product of someone else's dream.

This is like the circle of life.

2nd Paragraph - The Library of Babel

This library had several hexagon shaped rooms in which four walls had books shelfs that had thirty two matching books but the title did not match the inner contents of the book. The library seemed to follow two rules one being that there were 25 writing symbolism and the library existed since forever, there were other readers as well. Most of the books did not make any sense but someone said that there is that one master book that explains all the books in the library with translation of the 25 characters.

Project 7. Documentary: NAKED

For this project I was partnered with Vanna Chan who is also in my time class.

We were supposed to make a documentary on a fake event/object/ topic and make it look as real and true as possible. For our project we had to list down 5 ideas each. We deiced on one of the topics I came up with.

It was the Naked Disease. Which was based on a virus that ate up clothes fibres in a matter of seconds and that was contagious on other clothes as well. So we started by showing :
An establishing shot, going onto the victim facing the depth of this crazy disease that ate up clothes in her entire closet. Soon she puts on the news and saw a surveillance video of another girl going through that on the street. It had become a widespread disease by then. Further ahead we interview a scientist who explained us the disease and the precaution that they had come up with.  We ended it with a news article that said, Did you get naked yet?

We had an amazing time shooting and thinking about the story line. We were very excited and using a mix of premierepro and imovie was truly enthralling. We used all that we had learned so far in my time class.

During our critique the major let down was the sound quality, which was surprising as if you hear in the video there isn't much problem. But yes it was hard to hear a few parts in our video. But people seemed  to like our plot and found it hilarious. Our teacher said that he liked that how we choose a funny disease and made it look very serious. But just to keep the humour alive we did put a few extras to make it light and engaging.

All in all, the class just keeps getting better and this project by far was the best I've had.
Thanks, I hope you all like it!

Concept And Progress For The Documentary

 DOCUMENTARY

 Title : NAKED

1)Theme: There is a virus that is in the fabric material of clothes that actually eats up the clothes that can suddenly make a person go naked and can also make all the clothes in his or her closet disappear. This particular situation is called the "Naked Epidemic."
Perspective of theme:
Vision: Have clips of actual incidents happening, news reporters, witnesses, scientists and ultimately show that there's a way to kill the "Naked Epidemic."

2) Opening- Record a normal morning routine of a girl, then showing her opening up the closet and seeing that all her clothes are missing.
-Have a news reporter talking about this virus
-Have an actual incident where a person's clothes vanishes while walking on the street
-Have a witness that saw the incident
-Have a scientist telling the details of this virus and what they're working on to cure this.
Ending- Have flashes of newspapers that talks about the "Naked Epidemic"

3) -Establishing shot of the city in the morning, the apartment and the room
-Girl getting ready in the morning (shooting her bottom half only)
-Girl calling her friend to tell her that her clothes are missing from her closet (shooting from the
     back)
-Friend tells her about the virus and tells her to watch the news on tv
    -Close-up on tv
-News reporter reporting live from the scene where a person't clothes disappeared while walking
on the street (focus on face)
-Show the clip of the incident as something from the surveillance camera
-Shooting different angles as the news reporter and witness talks
-Shooting different angles as the scientist talks.

Attached photos are of the progress while taking the footage..
